The Last Frontier

Alaska is the largest state in the U.S., and its massive size is evident in the biodiversity that can be found here. In the summers it's cold, but its winters are far colder, and life either migrates or essentially hibernates when these intense seasons come in. If your a photographer or just a passive enjoyer of nature, I highly recommend coming here, as the residents are extremely friendly and happy to help you find anything you need, as well as the fact that there is more uninterrupted wilderness than in the entirety of the continental US!

Reintroduction- Musk Ox calf at the Large Animal Research Station

Part of a reintroduction program, the Musk Ox calf resides at the University of Alaska's Large Animal Research Station where it will be raised to adulthood and either be released or bred. The research stations efforts have successfully reintroduced the Alaskan Musk Ox and while their numbers are still small, they are slowly growing on their own and with help from the station.

The Wilderness that never Sleeps- Sandhill Crane

In the summer, Alaska is very famous for the fact that the sun essentially doesn't set, going no darker than twilight. The animals that live here have thus adapted accordingly, and many nocturnal hunters such as owls can be seen in much brighter light than normal.

Cranes, Geese, and Dew- Sandhill Crane and Canada Goose

Dancing with the Brook- Young American Dipper

American Dippers are hard to find at best, and when this sub-adult appeared on a creek in Chena I took advantage of the opportunity. Dippers are songbirds, but unlike many they dive in cold, fast flowing creeks and streams to catch their prey (hence their name). When idle, they bob up and down in a dance like fashion to help blend in with a near by waterway.
